Snowpacolypse: The Aftermath

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I might be alone on this, but does anybody else think that a week of snow days is perhaps the sneakiest source of stress this spring semester has to offer?  When I was in elementary school, there was nothing more exciting than a snow day.  I'd wear my pajamas inside out, and instruct my mom to wake me up as soon as the radio announced that there was far too much snow to even think about forcing fourth graders to trudge through the drifts to get to class.  Of course, my immediate response would be to put on my pink kitty snow suit and leap into those super dangerous drifts.

For some reason, I thought that these snow days would be the same as in days of yore.  I crossed my fingers and bookmarked Accuweather.com.  I had visions of sleeping in, then maybe heading outside to make a snow angel or two.  I realized that the citizens of DC were taking this way more seriously than I was.  I mean, who riots at Trader Joe's?  But I figured I'm from Pennsylvania, where we get snow all the time.  These people just aren't used to it, so they're panicking.  I figured there was no way we'd actually get 30 inches.  Obviously, I've been humbled.  30 inches is a lot.  I'm a small person, and after sinking into a drift up to my waist, I am very, very over winter.

Cut to 3 days later.  I am entirely out of food.  No bread, no milk.  Canned goods are running thin.  If the zombies decided to brave the winter temperatures, I would in no way be prepared.  This was upsetting, but the worst of the whole situation was the uncertainty.  Since DC has evidently never had a Snowpocalypse until I moved here, I spent many an hour wondering exactly how the school would handle so many snow days at one time.  Would they move exams?  Cancel spring break?  Chain us to the desks night and day?  I had no idea.  I'd run into people in my short treks into the Antarctic wild that was Dupont, and they'd have no idea.

It turns out, nobody really knows what to do about this.  9pm LRW classes?  Why not?  How many classes can we put in a row before you faint from hunger and typing fatigue?  Let's find out!  Obviously, this is no one's fault but Old Man Winter's.  Still, I'm staring down the barrel of 5 Civ Pro classes next week, and I'm wishing that I had spent more time enjoying the snow rather than stressing about making up Civ Pro.
